Redefining Mathematics: “I’ll Never Use This in Real Life”

Hey friends,

The past two posts, we have been talking about mathematics and the beliefs/myths popularly believed by people. First is the thought “I’m Not a Math Person” and second is “If I don’t get it fast, I will never get it”. Both are myths and not true. Having a mind shift about something is essential in gaining understanding about that thing.

Another popular myth is “I’ll Never Use This in Real Life”. But here’s the truth: you already use math every day.

When you compare prices at the market, calculate your phone data, follow a recipe, or track sports stats—you’re using math. It’s not always obvious, but it’s there.

Even jobs that don’t look like “math jobs” use math all the time. Nurses figure out the right drug doses and read numbers on patient charts, designers rely on measurements and proportions to make things look right, and business owners constantly calculate costs, prices, and profits. Math isn’t really about memorizing formulas; it’s about learning how to think clearly, solve problems, and make smart decisions in everyday situations.

So, the next time you are made to think it’s not useful, remember, math isn’t a distant subject you’ll “never use.” It’s already part of your life.

Love,

Ayobambo
